Today’s older adults expect a broad range of programs, services and educational opportunities. Primeplus (Norfolk Senior Center) classes and activities are designed to be responsive to the needs of the community and will change as the community changes, maintaining a focus on quality, cooperation and community resources.

Services to Seniors

AARP 55 ALIVE DRIVING COURSE
3rd Thursday & Friday of each month

55 Alive Driving Course is geared toward seniors ages 50 & older. This two day class describes local hazards, accident prevention measures, effects of medications on driving. Class consists of films and discussions. Auto insurance discounts are provided to Virginia drivers completing the course. Contact your insurance agent for details on the discount. Class size is limited and a prepayment of $12 for AARP members and $14.00 for non-members is required. Call the Center to reserve your space.

AARP INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE
February 1st – April 15th

AARP volunteers will provide free Tax Assistance for seniors Monday through Friday during the tax season. Primeplus has prepared over 1,600 tax returns in 2008 alone. Call 625-5857 for an appointment. Don’t wait until the last minute.
 
LAMP & SMALL APPLIANCE REPAIR
1st & 3rd Tuesday of each month

Have a lamp or appliance that needs help? This service is available on selected Tuesdays in the Woodworking Studio. There are small fees, but a center donation is appreciated.
 
REAL ESTATE TAX RELIEF REGISTRATION – Dates TBA

Representatives from the Office of the Commissioner of Revenue assist residential homeowners 65 years or older or those totally disabled in qualifying for Real Estate Tax Relief.  Proof of income and net worth must be provided.  For additional information call 823-1130. 
 
RETIRED & SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
RSVP is America’s largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over. RSVP provides meaningful volunteering for non-profit organizations with volunteers giving their time and talents to make a better community. Call 625-5857 for more details.

AARP SENIOR EMPLOYMENT
Looking for a job? The Norfolk AARP branch have immediate job openings in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, and Franklin for persons 55 years of age and older. Some jobs include: housekeeping, teacher’s aide, custodial, maintenance, grounds keeping, receptionist, and much more. Call 625-7001 to set up an interview.
